How an Adult Going Back to School Can “Fit in”

While getting scholarships for adults returning to college might not be such a tough ask, the desire to fit in with your classmates when in school can be something that might daunt some non-traditional students.

Yes, it might feel like a challenge to be sitting next to people who are much younger than you are, and so here are three tips which might alleviate this fear, and show you how to fit in with your class:

#1: You’re never too old to learn

With so many years of experience under your belt, an adult’s first impression of himself will most often be that he or she is too old to “get” back to school. Yet there are students of differing ages, some even at the age of 80, and to them a 30-year old might be still “young”. So you see that the word “old” in this regard is very relative. Break out of this mindset, and you won’t feel out of place anymore.

#2: Be genuinely interested in your classmates

If you are an adult going back to school after a long time, then it would be wise to not only make friends with the other non-traditional students in the class but with the younger students as well. Perhaps your experience might come in handy in helping them. If you make an attempt to get to know them, you might end up making friends.

#3: Be open minded

Obtaining the money that you required for college from single mothers grants can often be easier than studying after a very long time. With the methods used to teach students in college today very different from what it was a few decades ago, this means that you should avoid being resistant to these methods by being open enough to learn these new techniques even if it means that you have learn it from someone younger than you are.
